ESR Spectroscopy is a technique which can detect paramagnetism in a substance. When all electrons in a molecule are paired in it's atomic and molecular orbitals, it is diamagnetic. Whereas presence of an unpaired electron makes it paramagnetic. ESR is also used to study species like free radicals and triplet carbenes because both have one and two unpaired electrons respectively.
